Tay-Sachs, Sandhoff and GM-1

It is especially difficult to know what to expect with Juvenile Tay-Sachs, Sandhoff and GM-1 because the severity of the disease can vary greatly. Generally the younger the symptoms start the faster the disease will progress. A child whose development shows in early childhood will have a faster disease course than a child whose development shows in later childhood.

First Signs

Generally the first signs of Juvenile Tay-Sachs, Sandhoff and GM-1 are slowed development and muscle weakness.

Living with the Disease

Seizures, swallowing difficulties and excessive secretions become issues as the disease progresses.

End Stages

Eventually the child becomes dependent for all day-to-day functions, may require a feeding tube and may experience seizure activity.
