Late Onset (LOTS)
Tay-Sachs, Sandhoff and GM1 diseases
If you are affected with LOTS, eating and drinking safely are common challenges. Difficulty swallowing is called dysphagia. In LOTS it is caused by weakened or damaged muscles and nerves used for swallowing which can lead to aspiration pneumonia. Aspiration pneumonia occurs when small particles of food or liquid get into the lungs and cause respiratory infection. It can be very debilitating and every effort should be made to reduce the risk of getting it.
